Two of those divisions are worth pausing on. Separating fictional stories from photographs and video is a taxonomy choice that matters in a fetish forum, where the difference between something imagined and something documented is the difference that counts. And a board where members ask each other whether a given commercial site is any good amounts to peer review of the industry from inside its audience — the sort of thing the industry itself cannot buy.

The activity is real rather than archival: threads carry timestamps in minutes and hours, and a contributor leaderboard runs across week, month, year and all time.
